IPTG (isopropyl- β-D-thiogalactopyranoside) is a galactose analog that can be used to induce expression of cloned genes under control of the lac operon. It is often used in conjunction with X-Gal or Bluo-Gal in blue-white selection of recombinant bacterial colonies.
