Synthetic Defined Agar Plates

Our synthetic defined agar plates are formulated for yeast and fungal workflows that require precise nutritional control and reproducible growth conditions. Also referred to as synthetic defined media (SDM), these formulations contain defined components that allow researchers to selectively manipulate nutrient availability for genetic, metabolic, and physiological studies.
Synthetic Defined Agar Plates
What are synthetic defined agar plates?

Synthetic defined agar plates are solid microbial media formulated using precisely defined chemical components rather than complex nutrient extracts. These media typically contain a defined carbon source, nitrogen source, vitamins, salts, and amino acid supplements that allow controlled manipulation of microbial growth conditions.

Because of their defined composition, SDM are widely used in yeast genetics, auxotrophic selection, metabolic studies, gene expression workflows, and functional screening applications. Researchers can selectively omit nutrients, nucleobases, or amino acids to maintain plasmid selection, study metabolic pathways, or evaluate genotype-dependent growth phenotypes.

Why choose Teknova’s synthetic defined agar plates?

Our synthetic defined agar plates, including SDCAA, SC minimal glucose without uracil, Pichia drop-out adenine selection plates, and more, are supplied as sterile, ready-to-use, pre-poured plates, eliminating the variability and preparation time associated with in-house media production. Each formulation is manufactured to precise specifications to ensure consistent nutrient composition and reliable microbial growth.

We manufacture our SDM products using validated processes and rigorous quality control standards to ensure sterility, performance, and lot-to-lot consistency. We also support custom synthetic defined agar plate formulations, including modified nutrient compositions, nucleobase and amino acid dropout combinations, selective supplements, and alternative plate formats to support specialized yeast and fungal research workflows.
