Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Broth is a nutrient-rich liquid medium that supports the cultivation of a broad range of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, including fastidious organisms. It is used for the culture of Streptococcus spp., Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and other clinically relevant microbes, as well as fungi such as Candida albicans.

Applications include general-purpose cultivation, pre-enrichment from mixed or low-level samples, sterility testing, and use as a base medium for supplementation (e.g., blood or carbohydrates) in microbial characterization workflows.

  • Brain Heart Infusion Broth
  • Cultivation of Fastidious Bacteria: Supports robust growth of organisms such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus, Listeria monocytogenes, Neisseria, and Haemophilus.

  • Enrichment and Recovery: Brain Heart Infusion Broth is used to resuscitate stressed or injured bacteria from clinical, environmental, and industrial samples.

  • Sterility and Bioburden Testing: Employed as a rich medium for sterility checks and microbial contamination assessment in pharmaceutical, biotech, and environmental monitoring workflows.

  • Blood Culture Supplementation: Serves as a base medium (with optional blood or additives) for detecting bacteremia and fastidious pathogens.

  • Preparation of Inocula: Used to generate standardized bacterial suspensions for downstream assays, including identification and susceptibility workflows for fastidious organisms.

  • Anaerobe Cultivation: When supplemented with reducing agents, supports growth of anaerobes such as Clostridium.

  • Fungal and Yeast Culture: Supports growth of yeasts and molds (e.g., Candida, Aspergillus) for clinical and research applications.

  • Quality Control and Media Validation: Used with standard QC strains (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes) to verify media performance.

  • Food and Beverage Microbiology: Applied as an enrichment broth for detection of spoilage organisms and pathogens (e.g., Listeria monocytogenes).

  • Phage and Toxin Production Studies: Provides a nutrient-rich environment for bacterial propagation in bacteriophage amplification and secreted toxin assays.

  • pH: 7.40 ± 0.10
