Glycerol, non-sterile, is a clear, viscous polyol suitable for general laboratory use in microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry workflows where sterilization is performed as required by the application.

Common uses include preparation of glycerol stocks of E. coli and other microorganisms, formulation of cryopreservation mixtures, use as a carbon source in microbial media, addition to protein and enzyme storage buffers, and as a density modifier or solvent component in buffer and reagent preparation.

Properties and handling: miscible with water, hygroscopic, and high viscosity. Supplied non-sterile; sterilize by 0.22 µm filtration or autoclaving according to protocol before aseptic applications. Store tightly closed to minimize moisture uptake and contamination. For laboratory use only.

  • 99.5% Glycerol
  • Cryopreservation of Microbial Stocks: 99.5% Glycerol is used as a cryoprotectant for long-term storage of bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at −80°C.

  • PCR/qPCR Enhancement: 99.5% Glycerol stabilizes DNA polymerases and improves amplification of GC-rich templates.

  • Enzyme and Protein Stabilization: 99.5% Glycerol is included in storage buffers to prevent aggregation and loss of activity during freeze–thaw cycles.

  • Electrophoresis Sample Loading: 99.5% Glycerol increases sample density in DNA/RNA/protein loading dyes for reliable well loading.

  • Glycerol Density Gradients: 99.5% Glycerol is used to prepare gradients for ultracentrifugation of proteins and ribonucleoprotein complexes.

  • Restriction Digests and Ligation Reactions: 99.5% Glycerol helps maintain enzyme stability and activity in molecular biology workflows.

  • Carbon Source in Culture Media: 99.5% Glycerol serves as an alternative carbon source for bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

  • Cell Freezing Media: 99.5% Glycerol is used as a cryoprotectant in freezing protocols for prokaryotes and select eukaryotic cells.

  • Viscosity/Osmoprotection in Assays: 99.5% Glycerol reduces evaporation, adjusts viscosity, and protects sensitive enzymes during assays.

  • Protein Storage and Crystallography: 99.5% Glycerol is added to storage and crystallization solutions to prevent ice formation and preserve structure.
