Sodium azide solution is an aqueous preservative used to suppress microbial growth in laboratory buffers, reagents, and wash solutions. It acts as a cytochrome oxidase inhibitor and is commonly incorporated into stored aqueous formulations to reduce bacterial and fungal contamination, including in applications where contamination by organisms such as Escherichia coli is a concern.

For laboratory use only. Do not autoclave. Avoid contact with acids (risk of hydrazoic acid formation) and with metals/heavy metal salts (risk of shock-sensitive metal azides). Use only with compatible materials, avoid copper/lead plumbing, and dispose of solutions according to institutional and regulatory guidelines. Store tightly closed at ambient temperature and protect from light.

  • 10% Sodium Azide
  • Reagent and Buffer Preservation: 10% Sodium Azide is diluted into buffers and reagents to inhibit microbial growth (e.g., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus) during storage.

  • Antibody and Protein Storage: Added as a preservative in antibody and protein solutions for IHC, ELISA, and Western blot workflows to prevent contamination.

  • Flow Cytometry and Immunostaining Buffers: Included to inhibit receptor internalization and capping, stabilizing cell-surface epitopes during staining.

  • Chromatography System and Resin Storage: Used in column/resin storage solutions and instrument wash buffers to suppress microbial growth in FPLC/HPLC setups.

  • Mitochondrial Respiration Inhibition: Employed as a cytochrome c oxidase inhibitor in metabolic and enzymology assays.

  • Peroxidase Activity Quenching: Utilized to inhibit horseradish peroxidase activity in immunoassays and tissue staining protocols.

  • Instrument and Plate Washer Preservative: Added to wash and rinse reservoirs to minimize microbial contamination in automated lab equipment.
