There are five commonly used peptones that originate from plant or animal sources. They differ in nitrogen and amino acid content.
Meat Peptone is an enzymatic digest of animal bovine tissue (e.g., muscle, bone, skin, and pancreas). It is used for the cultivation of fastidious and non-fastidious microorganisms.
Soytone (soy peptone) is a pancreatic digest of defatted soybean meal. It is a good sources of vitamins and carbohydrates, and is used in the cultivation of a wide variety of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi.
Animal-free soytone is a papain (from papaya) digest of defatted soybean meal.
Tryptone is a pancreatic digest of casein (a dairy protein) containing all amino acids and larger peptide fractions. This nutrient source is commonly used in media for production of antibiotics, toxins, enzymes, and other biological products through fermentation.
Casamino acid and casein are often used interchangeably, as casamino acid is the hydrolysate derived from casein breakdown. Casein is a protein found in milk and its acid hydrolysis results in an amino acid mixture. When used in cell culture media, it provides a rich source of essential nutrients to foster the growth of diverse microorganisms and support protein synthesis.
